The exact number of children killed by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) before 2022 is disputed. However, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, 2,000 Palestinian children were killed by the IDF between 2000 and 2021. This includes children who were killed in airstrikes, ground operations, and other military actions.
The IDF has its own figures, which are much lower. According to the IDF, 425 Palestinian children were killed by the IDF between 2000 and 2020. The IDF claims that most of these children were killed in the context of armed conflict, and that the IDF takes all necessary precautions to avoid civilian casualties.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also tracks Palestinian child fatalities. According to OCHA, 1,881 Palestinian children were killed by Israeli forces between 2000 and 2021. OCHA’s figures are based on data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and other sources.
The discrepancy between the different figures is due to a number of factors, including the definition of a child, the methodology used to collect data, and the political context of the conflict.
